Survivor defense

Necrowave

Every so often the old Spire rings a bad note, and everything in the Hollow Reach that ever held a grudge gets up to answer it. Nobody agrees whose job it is. You turn up anyway, lay walls and turrets across the field while it is still quiet, and then the timer runs out and you fight inside what you built. You can do all of that here, in this tab.

Portrait, one thumb Build, then hold it Free

Worth knowing before you press it: this is a much bigger download than our other browser games, so the first load is not instant.

Necrowave title card: a cartoon skull with gold teeth on a purple background,
the word NECROWAVE beside it, and the line Weapons fire themselves. You just
                  move.

Two halves, one run

Five waves per field. Between them the ground goes quiet, a clock starts, and you spend Scrap by the cell: a Timber Palisade for ten, a Bolt Thrower behind it, a Sally Gate you can walk through and the horde cannot, a Frost Pylon for the ones that get past it. Everything refunds half. DEMOLISH takes back what you regret.

Build well and the wave arrives single file down a corridor lined with bolt throwers. Build badly and it arrives all at once, and you find out.

Then the fighting half, and your hands barely do anything in it. Weapons swing, throw and burn on their own cooldowns and pick their own targets, so nothing in this game is a test of your aim. You move. You dash through a gap that is closing. When you level, three cards come up and you take one.

Which leaves the thinking to happen twice a wave. Which build, and which ground. There is no health bar either: the meter across the top says INFECTION, it fills every time something reaches you, and it empties again on its own if nothing does for a while.

You never aim and you never fire

Necrowave controls
Move A stick under your thumb, bottom right. Everything you carry keeps swinging while you walk, so walking is most of the fight.
Dash The boot at the bottom left, with its charges counted on it. Bjorn’s dash is a lunge that knocks them back. Not everyone’s is.
Build Pick a wall or a turret off the tray and paint it onto the grid, cell by cell. The price sits on the tile, and anything you cannot afford is greyed out.
Ready The green button ends the build phase early and pays you Scrap for the seconds you handed back. It tells you how much before you press it.
Level up Three cards, one pick, and the game stops while you decide.
Stop Anywhere. The run saves itself mid-wave and comes back on the same wave, with the same walls standing and the same Scrap in your pocket.

Short sittings, and cartoon-macabre rather than grim. A zombie here is a worried green man with a bandaged head.

Seventeen things to put on the ground, and one of them is a gate

  • Eight walls and nine turrets

From a ten-Scrap Timber Palisade up through the Cairn Wall to a Sally Gate you can walk through and the horde cannot, and behind whichever of those you chose, anything from a Bolt Thrower to Grave-Breaker’s Anvil. You are not decorating. You are deciding where the dead will be made to walk.

  • Four regulars, and none of them are the same person

Bjorn Grave-Breaker treats the end of the world like a bar fight he has not yet lost. Sera the Unyielding will apologise to a zombie for the inconvenience of killing it. Rook Fletcher is here for the coin. He will tell you so twice. Ashen Pyrewood calls it a fascinating case study and takes notes while on fire. Each opens with a different weapon and a different dash, and the numbers underneath them differ enough that you will have noticed by the second wave.

  • Old Moss asks no questions

He turns up between runs with a cart and a ledger, and nineteen permanent upgrades priced in the gold a run banks, win or lose. Bone Plating, 90 gold: “Dented already. Saves you the trouble.”

  • The fifth wave brings up whatever is buried there

Grubnash the Goblin King, furious you are stealing his dead. Sir Mordraven appointed himself Master of the Wave and would like to give a speech about it, which he will be doing at some length whether or not anybody has agreed to listen. Sir Emberos wants a proper duel. He is not getting one.

  • A bus stop is a fine place to stop fighting

It saves mid-horde and picks up exactly where it was.

  • It plays the way you need it to

Screen shake on a slider, all the way to off. Reduced flashing. Damage numbers off by default. Haptics with a strength setting, or none at all. An extra safe-area inset for phones with awkward corners.
