Wreck Run

Tap on the ramp and the rocket fires at the lip. Hold in the air and he keeps turning over, and hold one beat too long and the head comes off before the rest of him lands. One button. How long you hold it is the only skill in the game. Everyone is riding the same track today, and this morning's wrecks are still lying on it.

Wreck Run title card: the logo over a green hillside with the line one button, one rocket, one very brave zombie, and a grinning zombie riding a pink firework rocket in from the right.

It is almost never the spin that kills you

The track gets faster the longer you last, and the gaps in the ground get wider while the landing pads shrink to something you have to aim at. Something ends every run. It is usually a hole.

On a ramp the press arms a launch, and it fires at the lip. Short hold, one flip. A longer one buys two, and anything past that means the ground turns up while he is still going round and you get to read the word the game has picked out for it. Let go and he picks an upright and drives to it.

Land a triple and the whole game drops into slow motion for a second while he rolls out of it, which is as close as this game comes to congratulating anybody. Then it speeds back up.

Between ramps the track throws hills, mounds and gaps, and about half the time there is a small ramp sitting on top of one of them. On flat ground the same button is a bunny hop, just enough to clear a gap at full speed. Press it late and you go in.

The wreck is worth staying for. The screen stops dead for a beat while the rocket comes apart, the pieces go up, and about a quarter of a second later the body catches up with the ground. Then the panel tells you which one you managed.

How to play

Wreck Run controls
Tap Tap, click, Space, W and all do the same job. On a ramp the press arms a launch that fires once at the lip, and the rocket goes off underneath him whether or not he was ready. On flat ground it is a hop.
Hold He keeps turning over as long as you hold. Let go too late and you arrive still spinning, which the game has a name for. LANDED STILL SPINNING.
Release Auto-level fires the moment you let go. He commits to one upright and drives there, never spinning faster than your own flip did.
Mute The speaker button in the top-right corner. It remembers what you set it to.

The first three runs coach the timing: a bobbing TAP! marker over the starter ramp, then HOLD! right after take-off and RELEASE! when it is time to let go. The first landing pad turns up early.

The only skill is knowing when to let go

  • A double pays three times a single

The window for two flips is barely narrower than the window for one, which means the greedy line and the right line turn out to be the same line. Take the second flip. What ends your run is the ground running out underneath you, not the extra half-turn you took.

  • The game has a name for what you just did

FACE PLANT. LANDED UPSIDE DOWN. LANDED STILL SPINNING. TIPPED OVER. FELL IN THE GAP. STALLED OUT. The result panel names the one you earned and hands you a line about it, and the line is usually that you should have let go sooner.

  • Your wrecks become the track

Come apart at 393 metres and the wreckage is still at 393 metres on your next run, at the angle you left it, wearing the skin you had on. You ride over your own morning. Tomorrow the track is new and the whole graveyard goes with it.

  • Armor buys you one free wreck

Any of the six. Copter thins the gravity out for long enough to finish a hold you should never have started.

  • Howler at 3000, Bonehead at 8000

Whichever skin you are nearer to sits on the HUD and counts down for the whole run. Both have a coin price as well, for anyone who would rather not wait to be good enough.
